An immersive journey through the untamed wilderness of Romania. With fantastic company, great hospitality and fabulous food along the way, The European Nature Trust invites you to join them deep in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains in support of Foundation Conservation Carpathia.
More than half of Europe's virgin forests are located in the Romanian Carpathians, with around a third of all Europe's large carnivores - making them amongst the most valuable natural areas left in Europe. This mixed with medieval villages and an traditional lifestyle creates a unique experience for all visitors.
We grant exclusive access to areas otherwise not available to the public, and to witness first hand the incredible work that is taking place to restore and protect this remarkable wilderness.
Not only does this trip promise to be an incredible travel experience, it will help safeguard Europe’s critically important ecosystems. Built into each trip is a contribution to Foundation Conservation Carpathia (FCC) to further their conservation efforts.
Only 3% of global giving is directed to environmental causes, it is time for change. Creating a world-class wilderness reserve in the Carpathians would benefit not only the biodiversity of this precious environment, but also the local communities and the whole of Europe.

Day 1: Arrival
After arrival in Bucharest we will arrange a transfer North out of the city and into the Carpathian Mountains. After a beautiful drive, we will approach the village of Bran – the rumoured home of Dracula’s Castle. After a quick pit-stop in the village and a walk through the market, we’ll continue our journey. In the hills above the village is the Inn on Balaban, our stunning mountain lodge with panoramic views of two mountain massifs. After settling in, we will enjoy welcome talk from the FCC team, who will set the scene for the trip. The group will relax over a sunset dinner and enjoy some lovely local Romanian wines
Day 2: Foundation Conservation Carpathia
The next morning, we will hike through some of the extensive remaining virgin forests, and learn about the large carnivore conservation, monitoring, and management activities of FCC. In a few years, the Fagaras Mountains shall become the largest forested National Park on the continent! That evening we will walk up one of the Foundation’s spectacular wildlife hides. Perched on one of the south-eastern ridges of the Fagaras Mountains, overlooking Pecineagu Lake, the hide is in the middle of the forest, but provides all the comforts you could need – expect a lovely homecooked dinner and good glass of wine. We’ll spend the evening looking out for bears, boar, deer and other wildlife and keeping quiet to hear the howls of wolves - trust us, you will not have had an experience like it before!
Day 3: Explore the Fagaras Mountains
After a hearty breakfast in the wild, we will get a chance to see the mountains of Romania, from above. We are transferred to Cobor by helicopter, where of course we will take the scenic route. The Cobor Biodiversity Farm is located in the heart of the Transylvanian hills. A few years ago, Foundation Conservation Carpathia donated 500 ha of abandoned farm land and began to develop a concept of biodiversity farming. In parallel, three ruins were restored into guesthouses, using traditional architecture and combining them with modern comfort. In the afternoon, we get to meet FCC’s executive directors and founders, Barbara and Christoph Promberger, and learn more about the project first hand. We will tour the farm and observe the variety of bird species such as lesser spotted eagle, golden oriol, hoppoe, great grey or red- backed shrike, stonechat and many more; and also discover the 250 plant species of the meadows around the farm. That night we’ll settle into our cosy bedrooms after a healthy organic and local dinner altogether!
Day 4: Departure
After a leisurely start, we have some options on our final day. For those that wish to embark on a horse ride and trek out into the Carpathians on horseback with the team from Cobor and Equus Silvania (a leading ecotourism business in Transylvania) we can arrange this for you. For those that wish to explore the medieval city of Sibiu, famed for its cobbled streets and Saxon heritage, that can also be arranged. Lastly we will arrange to have you back to the airport in Sibiu for your evening flight back home.
